On January 5, 2025, Dispatch notified Buchanan Police Department about a vehicle stopped on the side of the roadway, still partially in the road. Deputy Matthew Nichols, conveniently nearby, responded to the call. He parked behind the vehicle and stepped out, where he was greeted by the driver, Roy Lee Osborn, who appeared unsteady on his feet and using his hands for balance.
